Bren welcomes you to visit her garden at 17 Bryn Road

Open Saturday & Sunday (dogs on leads in entrance area only)

Welcome to the garden of Fern Cottage, 17 Bryn Road, home of Bren Mathieson since 2018.

Fern Cottage has a south facing front garden onto Bryn Road and is surprisingly peaceful, being tucked in behind the centre of St Davids City’s High Street.

When Bren moved here in 2018, it was simply a gently sloping grass area with a couple of shrubs, a misshapen self-seeded Sycamore, a border full of Daffodils and Butterbur and the Globe Artichoke which she has learnt to love; it being impossible to exterminate! See the “before Bren” photo below.

Bren decided to remove the Sycamore about 18 months ago, enabling more light, far fewer seedlings as well as space for storage and potting. She has gradually cut out more beds and borders, separated by grass pathways, which have a range of shrubs, perennials, herbs and vegetables, living happily alongside the wild flowers.

In March 2020 she didn’t cut the grass and was delighted to discover Ladies Smock growing everywhere, including the public green space across the road which was uncut due to lockdown; possibly for the first time since the bungalows were built about 50 years ago! Bren moved several Ladies Smock to a half-moon area of lawn which is now left as a ‘mini meadow’ to allow them and other wild flowers to thrive.

Access is through a farm gate, enabling wheelchair users to come into the first area of the garden. Unfortunately the grass paths are too narrow and uneven for wheelchairs. Great care should be taken by those with mobility difficulties who wish to walk on the  grass paths. Some seating will be available.

Please keep dogs on leads and at the entrance area only.
