We moved here just over a year ago, March 2024, to a garden which was mostly underwater after all the rain you’d had in Pembs since the previous September! The back garden was mostly grass with a few fruit trees planted right up next to the fences, a few scented climbers scrambled up the fencing. Nothing at the front but grass and mud.

We’ve dug out the front border over time and put in a mixed variety of cottage garden type perennials, roses and the odd annual and spring bulbs to fill gaps. It’s developing nicely – they’ve survived one round of winter storms, so we’re hopeful! I grow for scent and the bees – there’s no plan, it’s just a jumble of what I like. Lots of planted pots are collected under the windows to give a splash of all year round colour and interest. The back garden now has raised beds in one corner for our veggies, a small greenhouse in the other corner and various small fruit trees dotted about the garden. We’ve a small seated arbour in the middle and are developing a small flower bed with climbers around that. Dahlias and fuchsias in pots are placed on the fence line to add a bit of interest there. Bird feeders are currently in the middle of the grass as we’ve found the rooks flatten the plants if they are close to any borders or pots! They’re very much helping to reduce the numbers of leatherjacket larvae feeding on our grass roots so they are very welcome despite the mess they often make.
