16 – Maes Glasfryn

Welcome to Maes Glasfryn, a place for nature & community

Open Saturday & Sunday

Maes Glasfryn (meaning Glasfryn field or park) is the name for the exciting project taking place to protect a field in the heart of St Davids for nature to thrive and for community access, as well as prevent future development of this site. The project is a collaboration between the current private land owners, the Gray family, and EcoDewi, a peninsula based environmental community group.

The vision is for a field overflowing with wildlife in the heart of St Davids which locals and visitors alike can explore ensuring nature is respected. Natural paths will weave amongst beautiful wildflower meadows and woodland copses, and hopefully a wildlife pond will really boost biodiversity. To the north end will be a community orchard full of fruit and nut trees that the community and wildlife can help itself too, with pruning and juicing days taking place.

Started in 2023, almost 3,000 hedgerow and tree whips have been planted with the help of local residents volunteering, around 200 children from all 3 campuses of Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi, as well as the support of rangers and wardens from Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. In addition, 52 fruit and nut trees have been planted by volunteers thanks to support from Social Farms & Gardens. Trees and hedgerow have received maintenance from volunteers, paths are mown by the landowner and more recently 4 trial patches of wildflower meadows have been created.
